This publication is a revision of the first edition issued in 1975, as part
of the then Chemical Society’s highly successful ‘Monographs for
Teachers’ series. Many significant advances have been made during
the intervening years with regard to process development, ion exchange
materials, equipment engineering, and the continuing quest
for a better understanding of fundamental principles.
