The idea for this book stemmed from the multidisciplinary meeting on
“intelligent systems in medical diagnostics and therapy,” which was held
at Coventry University, United Kingdom, in October 2002. The meeting was
sponsored by the EUropean Network on Intelligent TEchnologies for Smart
Adaptive Systems (EUNITE), which aimed to promote research and developments
in adaptive and intelligent systems. It provided a unique opportunity
for technical specialists in the fi elds of control engineering, medical imaging,
and statistics to meet with medical professionals and allied sciences.
The book aims to capture the genuine richness emanating from the discussions
and debate, the various strands of thought, the raising of awareness,
and of stimulating the ideas for future multidisciplinary lines of inquiry
