It is widely accepted that communications technology—especially the
services offered through the Internet—has already become an inseparable component
of our business infrastructure and daily life. The progress in broadband
communications, enabling multimedia, videoconferencing, and mobility, is an
important facet of this dynamic technology. Current economic conditions, with
challenges to further reduce the operational expenses associated with the network
infrastructure and cost-effective means of access to it, have had a temporarily
adverse effect on the communications industry; nonetheless, traffic
continues to increase. There still seem to be many exciting opportunities for
innovations and developments in this field.
