To review the entire field of sleep physiology might be nowadays the task
of a collaborative treatise, rather than the aim of an article for Ergebnisse der
Physiologie. There is no urgent need, moreover, to carry on such a huge task,
since several books, review articles, and proceedings of symposia, partially or
wholly devoted to sleep, have been published during the last years.
