In this review the types of reactions that can occur will be given in
outline, and t,hen discussed for halides according to the grouping of
the metal in the Periodic Table. Since reactions with ammonia have
been studied in greater detail, these will be discussed first, and amine
reactions will be considered later. Reactions involving liquid or
gaseous ammonia have been studied by many workers over a period
of years, and much of the earlier work was reviewed by Fernelius
and Bowman (1) in 2940. Because of this, the present review will
be concerned mainly with studies made during the past twenty years,
although important earlier work will be included in outline and some
such work will be re-evaluated.
