The aim of this book is to present a systematic discussion of the alignment technologies
of liquid crystalline materials for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). These
technologies determine the molecular orientation and conformation of liquid crystal
phases on surfaces, and by understanding the technologies, both the structure
and the properties of the LCDs can be better understood. The reader will obtain
essential knowledge of LCDs through the discussion of the alignment technologies
given in the text, which as far as the authors know is the first to be written from
this standpoint.
