The International Energy Agency (IEA) states that in 2010, the energy sector was
responsible for the 65 % of greenhouse gas emissions and the percentage is
expected to reach 72 % by 2035. The energy debate confirms that CO2-intensive
coal and other fossil fuel will still play a growing role in meeting the future world
energy needs. On the other side, an increasing number of countries are developing
and implementing emission trading systems. The IEA estimates that the cost of
CO2 within the European Emission Trading System will reach $30/ton in 2020
(2010 value date) and $45/ton in 2035.
