This book arose during the process of revising the second edition of the
Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communication, when it became apparent
that one book wasn't enough to contain all of the technology developments
in wavelength multiplexing, optically clustered servers, small form
factor transceivers and connectors, and other emerging technologies. As a
result, we decided to split off the four chapters on futures from the original
handbook, combine them with many new chapters, and form this book,
which can serve as either a companion to the original book or a stand-alone
reference volume.
