Progressive muscle wasting and weakness are two characteristics of
various muscle wasting diseases, including muscular dystrophy. In
dystrophic muscle there is a net loss of myofibrillar proteins despite an
apparent increase in the rate of protein synthesis, suggesting that reduction
in muscle protein is largely due to increased protein catabolism.
