Only three decades ago, research on lactation was confined to relatively
few land grant universities and occasional specialized research institutes
around the world. Studies were limited to animals kept primarily
for dairy purposes and augmented to a limited extent by the use of laboratory
species. There was little relation between these studies and those
on human lactation being performed in the medical profession.
