Rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces were first considered in connection with questions arising in the theory of interpolation of linear operators. Now
they are the object of intensive study. The main property of r.i. spaces is
that the norm of any element X depends only on the distribution of X. This
is why probabilistic methods have been used successfully.
