"As the title of my book implies, my aim is modest. I seek to introduce the graduate student to Potential Theory. This work does not claim to be definitive in any sense, and it leaves out far more than it puts in. Those versed in the subject will complain, with justice, that there is much main line potential theory which is not represented here at all— notably perhaps that sector of the subject where the connection between potential-theoretical ideas and the theory of stochastic processes is explored by workers such as Doob, Hunt, Mayer, Herz and others. My hope is, nevertheless, that I have made some of the leading ideas in the subject a little more accessible than they have been heretofore.... "
