Аннотация:
This study investigated the role of various aspects of figure modification proposed by
Duval (1995), i.e., mereologic, optic and place way, on the operative apprehension of
geometrical figures. Data were collected from 125 sixth graders. Structural equation
modelling affirmed the existence of three first-order factors indicating the differential
effects of the types of figure modification and a second-order factor representing the
operative apprehension. The findings revealed interesting differences in students’
performance on mereologic, optic and place modification tasks. Furthermore,
students displayed greater consistency in applying the mereologic and the optic
figure modification rather than the place figure modification. Teaching implications
and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
