Quantum theory grew out of an interplay of ground-breaking experiments and radical theoretical proposals that were not based on accepted classical physics. Our objective in this chapter is to summarize briefly the critical events that took place between 1900 and 1925, when quantum mechanics was created. We shall be very brief in our coverage, since these matters are discussed in much more detail in textbooks on modem physics.
