This interdisciplinary study examines 4th century eschatological thought, that is to say those reflections upon the tension between the present and the future which help determine the situation between the church and the world. In its effort to clarify the relationship between theological thinking and social situation in the 4th century, it looks both at the pictorial and textual sources: iconography, as visualized in the imagery present in the apses of the Early Christian churches, acting as pictorial centrepoints of liturgical space, and liturgy, as evidenced by eucharistic prayers and cathehetical instructions of several early church fathers, are investigated together in an effort to find a structural agreement between picture and text within the context of the eucharistic ritual, and both provide a living picture of liturgical celebration, and examine various ways of thinking about salvation in relation to life in this world which were co-existing in the Christian thought of the era.
