The six articles in this book have been chosen to present the
broad aspects of modern algebraic thought. The first two, by
Saunders MacLane, are survey articles, devoted almost entirely
to topics of associative algebra. The remaining four present various
aspects of the theory of algebraic systems with a nonassociativc
operation. Modern lattice theory and the theory of finite planes are
not considered here, and are left to later volumes of this series.
