In the choice of the material for the monograph, I have been mainly motivated by those physical processes that have had an impact on the development of stochastic theory in general. I have deliberately avoided any discussion on neutron branching processes since they have been dealt with in detail by Bellman, Kalaba, and others in some of the earlier monographs in the series. I have also not discussed the utility of Monte Carlo methods in the cascade phenomena the success of which has been amply demonstrated in the case of electromagnetic cascades by Messell and his collaborators.
