The editors (both of the U. of Vermont's Department of Pathology) present an "eclectic" collection of what they consider state-of-the- art methods for imaging cells and molecules. The 21 papers begin with light microscopic methods for observing mRNA, calcium, and collagen. Next come contributions discussing confocal scanning laser microscopy, quantitative computer-assisted image analysis, laser scanning cytometry, laser capture microdissection, microarray image scanning, near-field scanning optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and reflection contrast microscopy.
