This book constitutes the thoroughly refereeed post-workshop proceedings of the Third IAPR Workshop on Document Analysis Systems, DAS'98, held in Nagano, Japan in November 1998. The 29 revised full papers included in the book have gone through two rounds of reviewing and were selected from a total of 53 papers accepted for presentation at the workshop. The papers address all current aspects of document analysis systems; they are organized in topical sections on document image compression and retrieval, document structure analysis, handwriting recognition, document image analysis, and document analysis systems.
