The electric dipole polarizability of an atom or molecule describes the response in lowest order of the field strength of the electron cloud to an externa! electric field. This property plays an important role in those collision '\ processes where the relevant electric field is that produced between collision partners, one or both of which is a neutral atom or molecule.
