Ideally, explosives should be detected by harmless methods at a distance, and unknown to the persons under inspection.

The ARW is one of a series of workshops dealing with the detection of explosives used by terrorists, and was initiated by the Explosive Detection Working Group of NATO to create applied research projects.

Projects included here aim at improvements in sensing techniques that will allow the shortest developing time sufficient to start commercial production. Potential short time availability is a prioritizing isssue.
