This book is intended as an introduction to some of the major problems studied by contemporary physicists. I have assumed that the reader is familiar with those aspects of the atomic picture of matter which can reasonably be said to be part of our contemporary culture but, apart from this, does not necessarily have any technical background. Where arguments about specific points of physics are given in the text, I have tried to make them self-contained.
