A previously introduced Landau "potential" for the description of the basic features of the two-component Rayleigh-B~nard problem is shown to be endowed with the relevant properties of the classical Landau singular free energy used in the study of equilibrium tricritical phenomena. Predictions of relevance to experiments on convective instability are also given.
