The master equation for chemical reactions that proceed through a number of steps (complex reactions) is considered. Examples are studied in which the reaction constant of one of the steps is much larger than the others, and a reduced master equation is derived by means of a projection operator formalism. This reduction amounts to an elimination of intermediates.
