Volume II of Analytic Function Theory, now laid before the mathematical public, is a direct continuation of Volume I. This applies to the numbering of chapters, sections, theorems, and formulas as well as to subject matter. The latter is on the whole more advanced than in Volume I. For the reader's convenience, a table of contents for Volume I is included in Volume II.
The subject matter of an introductory text in function theory is almost uniquely determined. In a book of intermediate character, such as the present one, the situation is different. Less of the included material need be canonical and more can be chosen according to the author's interest and preference. Such choice was freely exercised while the book was in the making, and in retrospect it is not always easy to justify this inclusion or that omission.
