From silex to plastics our species has struggled with many forms of condensed matter. But this study has been through a special time, in the 20th century, after
the explosive growths of quantum mechanics and statistical physics. Among
the pioneers, I usually quote four names to my students: John Bardeen, Phil
Anderson, Leo KadanofF, and Sam Edwards.
Sam is a fruitful example. He has been driven (I think) by two distinct
passions: a passion for architecture, and a passion for unicorns.
